OK! Relax! Do you know what just happened? While looking back and forth from the directions -- to your hands and fingers -- you were totally focused on ONLY those two areas!!! Nothing else occupied your attention. _________________________________________________________
<> C O N T R O L FORWARD-FOCUS!
Using two hands to steer helps you concentrate on the road ahead. It also helps remind you not to reach for items that will distract you. Let’s have some fun with a little excercise that helps to show how our eyes follow our hands! First, stretch both arms out directly in front of you. Press palms together and interlock fingers.
Remember: Keep your hands in front of you and your mind and eyes will tend to go in that direction. When you have your hands on the wheel, they cannot possibly fumble for a phone, a snack, water bottle or other distraction!! FORWARD-FOCUS is the key to avoiding many of the momentary distractions we encounter when driving.
There are enough distractions on the road, so please don't add to them by creating unecessary ones inside the vehicle--or inside your mind! Concentrate fully on your driving and remember, Mom:

Next, (still keeping your palms together) take your two index fingers -- point both of them forward -- and press the tips together firmly for five seconds.

<> 2 and 10 versus 4 and 8
Originally it was determined that both hands on the wheel in the "10 o'clock and 2 o'clock" position was best. However when an airbag releases it can injure a driver's arms if they are over the area where the bag is stored in the wheel. Therefore, the recommended position for the hands is now "8 o'clock and 4 o'clock," or somewhere close to this postition depending on the design of your steering wheel. While driving you should frequently check your thought pattern to see if you are maintaining your forward-focus. It's very easy to let our thoughts drift to where we are not thinking about driving even though we are in control of the vehicle. When you keep two hands on the wheel it can be a helpful reminder of what you are supposed to be thinking about at that moment. The "two-hand" position can act like a string around your finger to remind you to concentrate on driving.
